Acerca de (about ) Photoshop

Thu Dec 24, 2009, 12:56 PM

He ahí entonces mi aversión al photoshop.

I love and hate photoshop.

Undisputably is the most advanced photo editing tool so far, i remember when i first moved to digital photography, i depended considerably of post-editing:

"It doesn't matter a little garbage on the sand, i'll erase it with photoshop"

"It doesn't matter is underexposed, i'll lighten it up with photoshop"

"It doesn't matter the model is not wearing make up, i'll fix it with photoshop"

I was very proud to see the final outcome after hours of editing, to transform an average photo into something exceptional.

However i was also spending really loooong hours and hours fixing photos (specially because back then i did up to 200 pics per job). It was a lot of hard work that wasn't paying enough.

And the worst of all, if my photos being good depended so heavily on photoshop, then that means that i wasn't such a great photographer, but a post-editor.

So there's the origin of my dislike of photoshop.

Nowadays i'm extremely thorough when it comes to photo shootings. I don't press the button until i see no lose hair on the face, until the light is perfect, until the clothing is wrinkle free, until the skin shines the way i want it to, etc. There will always be something overlooked, but to me the less post-editing the better.

And well, that's just good practice, however there's another thing to consider, and is the "atmosphere": elements like color intensity, dynamic range, digital darkroom, vintage effects, etc., that really enhance the essence of the original photograph and that perhaps would not have been possible from the momment of shooting.

But that's just what i used to do: massive post-editing to improve a photo. To such degree then is no longer photography i believe. I'm sure you have seen here what some artists are capable of achieving with stock photos, really impressive stuff. But that's not photography.

So... how much photoshop is then acceptable as a photographer?

As worth mentioning, in most photography contests they always specify that the only editing acceptable is in saturation and contrast. I think that says something about it.

I am... strange.

I am a mechanical engineer, make my living with graphic design and advertising, yet i fancy myself more of a photographer, and my hope is to one day become a filmmaker.

I believe art happens everyday everywhere and if we just look carefully will be able to see it, that's my favorite part of photography, the posibility to capture ephemeral beauty, and share it with others.

My preferred theme is human emotion, I invariably work with music (I was born with an i-pod implanted in my head) and has to match the ambiance of the scene like the perfect soundtrack (see? movies).

I have many other useless talents too long and too self-centric-sounding to ennumerate here.

I like chocolate.

Thanks for stopping by and looking at my work.
